Gaza Famine: A Man-Made Crisis

In an urgent appeal to our shared humanity, 14 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council have formally recognised what Palestinians have been enduring for months: the famine devastating Gaza is not a natural disaster, but a man-made crisis. This acknowledgement is historic, as it is the first time famine has been officially declared in the region. More importantly, it underlines a painful truth: starvation is being used as a weapon of war, a direct violation of international law and human dignity.

The consequences are staggering. Over half a million Palestinians are already facing famine conditions, with numbers projected to rise in the coming weeks. Families are enduring hunger on a scale rarely seen in modern times. Parents are forced to make impossible choices, skipping meals to feed their children, stretching scraps of bread for days, or searching through rubble and debris for anything that can sustain life. Children, the most vulnerable, are suffering acute malnutrition. Their growth is stunted, their bodies weakened, their futures stolen before they have even begun.

This famine is not an accident. It is not the result of drought or natural disaster. It is the outcome of policies that have cut off food, medicine, and basic supplies from entering Gaza. It is the deliberate targeting of civilians by depriving them of the necessities of survival. International law is clear: starvation of civilians as a method of warfare is prohibited. Yet in Gaza, this prohibition is being ignored, and an entire population is being starved into silence.

Beyond the statistics and legal frameworks lies a deeply human story. Gaza is a place of families, of schools, of marketplaces, of vibrant culture and history. Today, those same families gather at aid distribution points, hoping to receive a bag of flour or a handful of rice. Instead of relief, many are met with danger, as Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire near food lines, killing and injuring countless civilians. The scenes are harrowing: mothers clutching children, men carrying sacks of bread as if carrying treasure, and communities moving through streets reduced to rubble in search of the most basic human right, the right to eat.

The international community cannot turn away. This is not simply a political conflict to be debated in halls of power. It is about people: ordinary men, women, and children whose dignity and humanity are being stripped away. To remain silent in the face of such suffering is to be complicit in it.

Now more than ever, the world must act. A permanent ceasefire is not a luxury; it is a necessity. Humanitarian corridors must be opened, aid must flow freely, and the collective punishment of civilians must end. Beyond immediate relief, there must also be accountability. Those responsible for perpetuating this crisis must be held to account under international law.

Palestine’s voice must be lifted on the global stage, not silenced by hunger. Each story, each child, each family matters. We have a choice: to remain silent, or to speak out for Gaza, for justice, for humanity. History will judge us by that choice.
